Boys Basketball Tonight

Tonight's contest with Belding will only be for 7th and 8th grade A teams.  Belding does not have any B teams this year.  The 8th Grade A team will play at 4:15 and the 7th grade will play immediately following, generally around 5:15.

School Messenger

Sparta Area Schools is implementing a new system to help communicate with our parents.  The system, School Messenger, will be used to communicate school closings and delays as well as informing you of upcoming events.  Below is a link to the letter that is being communicated to all families through the website, building blogs and email blasts.  As is the key to any communication plan, having the most up to date and accurate information is vital.  Your assistance with this will be very important to us.  If you have any questions, you can contact the building.

Google Apps for Kids

As we are transitioning into using more web based instructional tools, we have found numerous limitations with our current operational procedures.  One that we are attempting to address is the fact that students do not have email addresses.  Many websites require an email address to allow access to the tools and functions within the site.  By using Google Apps we can provide a controlled email address that students can use to access educational sites.  The main restriction on the email address is that we own the domain so they will not be allowed to email outside addresses.  This will limit them to contacts with staff and other students.

Below is a letter that also explains this. Just open the link:

Let us know if you have any questions.

Middle School Band Performance

We had an awesome performance from our middle school band last night.  It never ceases to amaze me the quality they are able to produce.  They are a fine representation of Sparta Middle School.  My appreciation is also extended to the staff for their work with them, Ms. Mroczek, Mrs. Ruffer and Mr. Walsh.  My appreciation goes out to the families that have supported these young talents as they practice and grow in their craft.  Thanks to all.

I also want to apologize if you had to wait and be inconvenienced by our tremendously large audience last night.  We will revisit the structure of our holiday performance for next year.  Considerations to be made will include a greater staggering of the start times for the performances or holding the performances on separate days altogether.  I welcome your ideas and suggestions as well.  I appreciate your understanding and support.

More information regarding the fundraiser will come home with your student.  For those who do not wish to participate in  fundraising, we are willing to accept donations in lieu of participation.  We set a goal of every child selling at least 2 paid orders.  This generates $20 on average for the fundraiser.  If a donation is something you would rather participate in, we would appreciate a $20 donation. Thank you for your consideration.

Student Led Conference Feedback

We did not have the amount of participation in our conferences this fall as has been the norm.  We were down roughly 30% from previous years.  I am very interested in trying to determine why this might have happened.  Our parent participation is a point of pride and we recognize the importance it plays in a student's success in the middle school.  If you were unable to attend conferences this fall, I would really appreciate your feedback.  Under "Surveys" on the left, you can either complete a survey online through Survey Monkey or print off the paper version, complete and turn in to the office.  We ask that we have all surveys completed by December 16.  I appreciate your time and consideration.

Addition to the Blog

I have a growing library of links that I have compiled over time about topics like education, parenting, generational characteristics, and trends, to name a few.  I have added a section on the right side of the blog under "Interesting Articles"to showcase some of these.  I do not always agree with every sentiment and word but often find the thoughts compelling and challenging.  I hope you find them compelling and insightful as well.  I always welcome your thoughts and feedback.  If you find an article that you find worthwhile to share, please send me the link.

Enjoy!

1st Trimester Ends December 2

Our first twelve week trimester ends on December 2.  We have every expectation that report cards will come home on December 9.  These come home in report card envelopes that students are expected to have their parent/guardian sign.  Please look for them.

We are also in the beginnings of our Toys for Tots campaign.  Our Student Government takes a great deal of pride in our contributions every year.  This is a worthy cause and does come back to benefit kids and families in our community.  I encourage you to do what you can.  I do caution you to do no more.  I am often amazed and humbled by the generosity of our families.  I am often concerned that kids try to compete or feel compelled to do what they cannot because it is socially rewarding.  The gifts that are given at this time are, and should be, from the heart.  Please encourage your student to work from that perspective and not some of the social pressures that we all often feel at this time of year.

I wish you the happiest of Thanksgiving holidays.  I am continually thankful for what I have and that includes the privilege of working for Sparta Area Schools and the families of Sparta Middle School.  Thank you for the opportunity.

Monthly Newletter

The December/January newsletter will be sent out at the end of the month.  We have not received many requests for a paper version to be sent home from our families.  This next newsletter will be our first all digital version.  If you would desire a paper copy, you can still complete and return the form that was sent home in the October newsletter.  You can also print the form from the newsletter link on the left of this page.  Please return the form to the office if you are interested.

Thank you.

Conference Attendance

We were a bit disappointed with our conference attendance this past fall.  Roughly 40% of our families did not attend this year.  We all understand how hectic and complicated life has become, especially with teen children.  I am concerned with the fact that we were unable to have face to face time with many of our parents and answer any of their questions.  What I am planning to do is reach out to these families and request their feedback on what we can do better, what led to their inability to attend and if there is a diminishing need, in their view, of holding conferences with technology making information so readily available. I still believe in the value of conferences.  I also recognize that life makes any extra commitment harder.  I truly value your input.  I strive to provide you with the best possible product, a quality education for your most important possession, your children.

I will make the survey available here and will send you a hard copy as well.  If you did attend conferences and want to provide your input on this matter, please feel free to do so as well. I will plan to post the survey next week.

Thank you.

MEAP Cut Score Changes

As you should have heard, the State of Michigan is recalibrating MEAP cut scores.  In essence, the test has not changed but what they consider proficient will change.  The change they made is not subtle.  We will see significant drops in scores across the state. Sparta Middle School will not be exempt from this drop.  We will know in a few months what this will mean, exactly.  You will see in the press some articles and reports that will show a comparison of previous MEAP performance under the new proficiency standard.  This will attempt to represent the outcomes if the changes had been made a few years ago.  This data, too, will likely be stark.  I am trying to communicate this information so you can be informed and prepared.  You should plan to hear more information regarding this in the coming months.  Attached here is a link to a document that also communicates some of this same information.  Please take some time to review this information.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Thank you.

Middle School Magazine Fundraiser

We hold one annual fundraiser in the middle school.  The magazine sale generates revenue that we use to provide academic acceleration programs such as ATYP and Science Olympiad.  We use these funds to provide rewards to students recognized for good behavior or successfully achieving a defined outcome. We purchase site licenses for the online math program, iXL, to assist our struggling math students.  These monies pay for the ever growing costs of transporting our students to camp and Art Prize.  We provide scholarships to students who are unable to afford things during the year.  We fund 8th Grade Unity Games and 8th Grade Recognition.  These resources pay for entrance fees into Band Festival and Solo/Ensemble and the related costs.

As you can see, these monies are important to providing a well rounded opportunity to our student body.  We appreciate all the support our community provides to make these opportunities available.  We will have our sale in January.  In the meantime, you can renew your current magazine subscriptions or start new ones at any time.  You can access our online catalog at:

http://www.qsp.com/Personalize.aspx?profile=kfty&extTrackID=LaunchEmail

Your child can even earn credit toward prizes from your purchase!

We appreciate your support!

November Newsletter

The November newsletter is now attached to the blog on the left.  Please take a few moments to review the content.  The final page of the newsletter has a request form for parents.  The purpose of the request form is for parents to elect to receive the newsletter in paper form.  You may print the form from this attachment or you can use the paper version sent home in this month's newsletter.  Anyone not electing to receive the newsletter will have the newsletter emailed to them, if we have an updated email address in Power School, or it can be found here on the blog.  We will begin the process of sending newsletter in this fashion with the December/January newsletter.  If you have any questions, please contact the middle school office.

Thank You.

6th Grade Camp Scheduling Issue

I wanted to inform you of a problem we ran into, how it came to be and how we decided to resolve it.  Camp Pinewood, the camp we have attended for the last 10 years, had a series of transitions over the summer.  The Director of Operations and the Camp Director are new.  We worked with them through the transition for our camp experience but someone on their end dropped the ball.  They had us scheduled for camp October 31-November 4. They emailed us on Tuesday evening to let us know they were looking forward to us coming next week and if there was anything we needed from them.  Alarm bells rang and panic ensued.

We have documented communications regarding our plan to go on November 7-11 but no contract, our fatal flaw.  They booked another school on November 7-9.  Therefore, they bounced us from that as an option because of the contract they had with the school.  We felt it improbable to organize with parents for next week when we were informed of the issue on Wednesday/Tuesday evening.  We looked at other camps for the window we had communicated to our students and families but none were available.  We also considered moving camp to the spring but the power of the experience is the team building and relationship building.  We have it as late as we can stand now because MEAP forces our hand.  We felt that was not conducive to what we have organized camp to be.

Our team decided to use the back half of our planned week for both teams.  The rationale for our decision is that we had already inconvenienced one half of our kids and families, especially the parent chaperones, because of the change from the first half of the week.  We did not want to do that to the other half.  In addition, we are hopeful that the parent chaperones might have some flexibility to move their time away from Monday-Wednesday to Wednesday-Friday.

I apologize for this inconvenience and any possible strife or conflict that this creates.  We value your support and involvement as parents and detest the idea of causing our supporters anything negative. We value your time and assistance and look forward to its continuation.  If you have any needs of me, please email me at, joel.stoner@staff.spartaschools.org or call our office at 887-8211.

Thank you.

Advisory Baskets at Conferences

For the second year, we will have some really nice baskets that were put together by various advisories.  You will be given the opportunity to bid on these baskets and the best bid at the end of conferences on November 1 will be awarded the basket.  This is a fundraiser for our Meet in the Middle parent group.  Similar to the PTC at the elementary buildings, the purpose of this group is to support the students and teachers so that the education provided to our students is maximized.  All proceeds come back to our students and school.

In addition, if you wish to contribute to the baskets as a business owner or individual, please contact your child's advisory teacher.  I am confident we can find a valuable use for your generosity.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance.  We look forward to seeing you on October 27 and/or November 1at Student Led Conferences.

Interesting Article About Public Schools

I do not ordinarily push out articles that I find on the web or have shared with me.  This article did not seem to take a position that would lead me to feel it might offend or alienate someone.  If you are reading this blog, you are probably a public school supporter.  This article speaks to the facts around public schools.  All in public education, working in and supporting of, need to do a better job getting out the facts regarding our performance.  This article speaks to that specifically.  I hope you enjoy it.....

Parent Volunteers

For the next two weeks, we are in need of a couple of parents to help with extension activities in math classes in the 6th grade.  These students have tested out of the unit and we are providing them challenges beyond the curriculum.  We will need the help in the afternoons from 12-2:20.  There is a need every day but if you can only give a couple days a week, etc, we will take it!  If you are willing and able, please contact Mrs. Karen Owen at karen.owen@staff.spartaschools.org.  You must complete a volunteer permission form/background check through our office before you can volunteer. If you have done these previously, you are all set.  The form is attached below and can also be found to the left under "School Forms".

Homecoming and Parade

We have the Homecoming Parade tonight at 5 pm.  Please come join us downtown.  Our middle school 7th and 8th grade bands will be performing.  This is a tremendous celebration of the Spartan spirit.  Following the parade, stay for our last home varsity football game.  The boys are 6-1 and playoff bound. Any additional wins will help toward solidifying a home playoff game.

I want to remind you that under the athletics information you can order state playoff gear.  Help support our team and wear your Spartan Pride.

Picture Retakes

We are planning for picture retakes on October 19.  Picture forms are located under School Forms on the left.

State Football Playoff Clothing Orders

It has been a few years since we have been able to order football playoff gear.  If you are interested in ordering something, please print the form attached under Athletic Information to the left and fill out what you want.  Checks need to be made out to “Sparta Football”.  Orders need to be turned into the school by Tuesday, October 18.  This will allow for the items to be returned before the playoff game.  You can send the order to the middle school or submit them to the high school.  This is an exciting time and, as always, it is good to be a Sparta Spartan!

Open House Feedback

At the start of the school year we sent a survey to parents of students that could not attend our Open House.  We want to know what conflicts we create with our scheduling that we might be able to alleviate to improve our attendance.  This year we had 85% of our families attend.  Having 15% not attend is reason for concern.  We are collecting the feedback of the 15% to help drive any changes.

We also understand that those who attended may have had to make sacrifices to make that happen.  So....if you are so inclined, we would appreciate your feedback as well.  I am attaching the survey that you can print off and complete. Please consider giving feedback to us so we can meet your needs.

Thank you.

Student Led Conferences

There were different dates posted for our conferences this fall.  The accurate dates are Thursday, October 27, and Tuesday, November 1.  Both evenings begin at 4:30 and end at 7:00.  We apologize for the confusion and error.  If you have any questions, please contact our office at 887-8211.  Thank you.

MEAP Begins Tomorrow

MEAP testing in grade 3-8 will begin tomorrow.  Testing will occur for all grades on Tuesday and Wednesday and just 4th and 7th grades this Thursday.  We will have scheduled make ups following that.  We again test all students in grades 3-8 next Tuesday and Wednesday.  All days following that will be used as make up days.  If you can have your child in school on the testing days, it will make life a lot simpler for your child.  Make ups tend to disrupt the instructional hours for kids.  There is a complete schedule attached on the left.

Paint the Town

Today we had a large group of kids and parent volunteers help Mrs. Aitken "Paint the Town" in preparation for the Homecoming Parade on October 14.  A few local businesses in downtown Sparta graciously allowed our kids to add a bit of Spartan spirit and pride.  Please take time to drive through town and view their artwork.  If you have any needs that these local businesses can provide for you, please consider using their business as a thank you for supporting our schools.  Their willingness to allow this will make the Homecoming experience even better.

Camp Coffee and Art Prize Update

Our sixth graders have been selling coffee to help offset costs of camp. Today we had close to nine hundred pounds of coffee delivered from Herman's Boy. Students will be delivering the coffee soon. In the meantime, the halls smell fantastic. Not something you can say about a middle school very often, actually. We will enjoy it while it lasts.

Art Prize 2011 was a tremendous experience for our seventh grade students. The weather was amazing and our students represented our school very well. We are very thankful for the many parents who volunteered to help chaperone the trip. Having a local artist in the top ten was a great thing to experience. This is a tremendous cultural experience that we will plan to share with our students for years to come.

Couple Reminders....

A busy week lies ahead of us....

Art Prize for our 7th graders will take place this coming Monday.  Please encourage comfortable shoes, remember their lunch and remember the sunblock.

This coming Wednesday is our student count day.  If you can, please try to have your child be in attendance.  We do not want ill children at school but if they can come in and you can avoid appointments that day, we will appreciate it.

All next week is our Spirit Week.  Please encourage your student to take part in the activities.

Next Thursday is 8th Grade Unity Games.  This annual event is a lot of fun for the kids.  Students are asked to minimize hair coloring and face paint.

Have a great weekend.  Thank you for your continued support.  It is valued and appreciated.

Male Camp Chaperones Needed!!

One of the best parts of camp is the experiences students have with the parents that attend camp as chaperones.  In fact, camp is only possible with the help of our chaperones.  One of the greatest responsibilities of the chaperone is supervision in the cabins at night.  We usually have the hardest time securing males to supervise the male cabins.  This year is different in that we have a desperate need for male chaperones.  We do not have enough to provide an enjoyable experience.  We are seeking your assistance.  If you are able to help chaperone your 6th grader and are a male, please consider contacting your child's advisory teacher.

Thank you for your consideration.

Revised Volleyball Schedule

We have deleted the previous volleyball schedule and have attached a revised version.  This version should replace your previous version.

Thank you.

Art Prize Rescheduled

We have rescheduled our Art Prize field trip for 7th grade for next Monday, October 3.  As of today, (I do realize that this is Michigan and I am setting myself up just by mentioning this but....) the weather looks good for next Monday.  We will look to move this one more time if the weather changes and it will benefit the experience for the kids.  We are all excited for this opportunity!

Art Prize Trip is Postponed

Due to impending inclement weather, we are postponing our 7th Grade Art Prize trip.  This is a wonderful trip that is best enjoyed with decent weather.  Much of the day is set for outside travel.  We will reschedule the trip.  The date for this will be set very soon.

Thank you for your understanding.

Parents and Technology

I am attaching a link to a publication that communicates issues to educators and parents of adolescents.  This article is lightly informative but provides a few good websites for parents to consider as well as a technology survey for you as a parent to complete.  This might just be fun for your kids to give you.  I am proud to say that I earned the honor of "Very Technology Savvy".  Enjoy!

New MEAP Cut Scores

Recently, the Michigan Department of Education announced changes to how MEAP scores will be calculated via an increase in the cut score.  This will have an impact on our overall performance ratings as a building and district when MEAP results are released next year.  The scores may communicate differently but, our students and staff are working just as hard this year to do their very best.  As we prepare for the MEAP testing window of October 11-28, I want you to be informed regarding the arbitrary change that was made.  I could go on for a while regarding the validity of a test where you expect a 30% drop in student performance through the decision to change what constitutes proficient.  We will continue to work to improve our delivery and grow student abilities.  I ask that you continue to support your child at home with homework and encourage their continued efforts, on MEAP and all assessments.  Thank you.

Transportation

I want to start with apologizing if last week's transportation issues caused any stress for you or your family.  I believe we have worked through the majority of the bugs that impacted our building and we are very close to exactly on schedule.  I want to thank the drivers and the team in our Transportation Department for their work to help rectify the issues.  If you are having any difficulties with our transportation system, please call 616-887-0136.  If this is unsuccessful, please call our building at 616-887-8211.  We would love to help.

Thank you.

Art Prize

Our 7th grade will be going to Art Prize again this year.  We are planning for Tuesday, September 27.  Because this event is very weather contingent to ensure an enjoyable experience, we will cancel if the weather is unfavorable.  We have rain dates planned and will use these if necessary.  Here is a link to the information that will be sent home to the students: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1037Hvua1NFKhZiSHP5uCV8t7SoewyNlA7p-mXpnbBEI/edit?hl=en_US#

This has been a very exciting and successful event for our 7th Grade and I expect more of the same this year!

6th Grade Coffee Sale

I wanted to let you know that we are all set for our coffee fundraiser, we will again be selling high quality Herman's Boy Coffee. We will be adding a few flavors and will need to charge $11, an increase from $10. Coffee prices have gone up a lot and this is still a great price considering. For every bag that is sold, the students will make three dollars to use toward camp costs. The forms will be passed out by Friday this week. The sale will end on Friday, September 23rd.   We will be able to pass the coffee out by Friday, October 7th.   Below is a link to the information sent home with students.

Please support our students as they work to cover their costs for 6th Grade Camp.  Also, please support Herman's Boy Coffee throughout the year, they have been wonderful to our school.

Great Start to the New School Year

We had a very good start to the new year.  It is very nice to have the energy in the building that only excited socializing middle schoolers can bring.  We transitioned through our abbreviated schedules smoothly.

I understand that there were a couple of bus pick up issues this morning.  We are doing the best we can right now in straightening out bussing assignments and communicating with parents.  The phones are being answered here in Sparta. There has been several people answering the phone continuously this morning, however when a call is being answered new calls simply continue to ring.  Please be patient and/or call a bit later today as the calls begin to dwindle.

In addition, I will be sending out a survey to all parents that did not attend Open House.  I am acutely aware of conflicts that cause the need to bypass this event.  I want to be sure that is the reason for the absence.  I would appreciate your feedback when requested.

If we can serve you or your student in anyway, please contact us.

Thank you for the privilege of working with your children.
